Filia Ul Copt
Filia is a Ryuzoku - she's of the "dragon race". Specifically, she is a Golden Dragon and a priestess of the Fire Dragon King. She's religious, stubborn, and initially very naive about the way the world works as well as ignorant of the true history of her clan.
Filia is very set in her ways and has a deep hatred of evil in general. Although she is a very sweet and caring character, she also has a volatile temper that rival's Lina's in ferocity, especially when it comes to Xelloss (and to people who peep under her skirt!). Her mace-sama is never far away from her person, and she usually bashes first and asks questions later.
Although Filia regards her race as being "perfect", she does mature and grow throughout the series. When she learned about how the Golden Dragons exterminated Valgarv's race (the Ancient Dragons), she got past her initial denial and begged for Valgarv's forgiveness, even going so far as to renounce her duty as a priestess.
Xelloss
Xelloss is a Mazoku - that is, he's of the "evil race" (in english, referred to as a "monster"). His master is the Beastmaster Zellass Metallium, who is one of the five Mazoku lords created by Shabrangdu.
When Xelloss enjoys playing the roll of the "Trickster Priest" and often plays jokes on and harasses the rest of the cast. Although he plays himself off as a harmless jokester, he is nevertheless dangerous and will not hesitate to manipulate people and even kill comrades if it will fulfill his goals.
As a Mazoku, Xelloss feeds on negative emotions such as fear, anger, sorrow, or pain. Positive emotions actually harm them, as evidenced a few times when Amelia uses happy thoughts to threaten Xelloss. This would prevent them from being able to care about, let alone love, other beings.
Although Xelloss quickly integrates himself with the rest of the cast and seems to be working towards the same causes as everyone else, he actually always has his own agenda which he never reveals. His catch phrase, in fact, is "Sore wa himitsu desu!" or, "That is a secret!"
Xelloss and Filia
Xelloss and Filia are complete opposites by nature - Filia standing on the side of good, and Xelloss firmly rooted to evil. In fact Xelloss was the one who killed many of her kind in the Kouma war a thousand years ago, and she has hated him immensely ever since then. Xelloss is aware of this and likely fuels her ire even further because of it - she probably makes for a great feast.
What we have here is a most hilarious love/hate relationship, though the "love" aspect is mostly fueled by Xelloss' strange actions that are caused more by completing his agenda than actually having any feelings towards Filia. Most of the time, the two are fighting - Xelloss loves to provoke her and Filia loves to bash him and insult him. A common insult is "namagomi", which means "raw garbage".
Could these two ever possibly enter a proper relationship with each other? Well, probably not under ordinary circumstances. Mazoku almost definitely can't fall in love or even be in the proximity of love without killing themselves. However, that's what fanfiction is for! Dreaming up ways to get these two together is half the fun, whether it's a full-out relationship, one of convenience, one using the other, or an alternate universe situation.
However you define their relationship, being platonic or deeper than that, it makes no difference. If you like the way Xelloss and Filia interact, it's all good!
